RAIL travel around the UK can be pricey and your wallet can take a massive hit if you try to buy a train ticket the day before you travel.

And one man has proved that by showing it is cheaper to fly from Newcastle to London via Menorca that take the train.

Student Joe Furness, who proved it was cheaper to fly from Newcastle to London via Menorca than take the train

Student Joe Furness, 21, wanted to travel from the north east to the English capital but saw that a one-way fare would set him back £78.50.

But after trying to work out a cheaper alternative, he discovered he could fly from Newcastle to Menorca, spend 12 hours on the Spanish island, before flying to Gatwick, for just under £39.

And after deciding he couldn’t be beaten on price, Joe decided to book the trip and filmed it all for a vlog he posted on his YouTube channel Wandering Joe.

For the first leg of his trip, Joe took a Thomas Cook flight from Newcastle to Menorca costing him £15.99

The video shows him travelling from his house to Newcastle Airport to catch the £15.99 flight to Menorca.

When he reached the holiday destination, Joe had enough spare change to enjoy a drink before heading to the beach where a festival was taking place and hiring a car for £7.50, which he used to sleep in that night.

Then the next morning, he boarded a flight to London Gatwick, which cost him £10.99, meaning the total cost of his trip was £40 less than the train.

But despite the journey taking close to 24 hours rather than three hours on the railways, he says he doesn’t regret the long trek.

Once in Menorca, Joe hired a car from £7.50, which acted as his hotel for the night too

While on the Spanish island, the 21-year-old also had time to enjoy the beach

He told metro.co.uk: “I’m always looking at flight websites and when I saw the price of the train I thought “why not?”

“I flew to Menorca with Thomas Cook, I found a sick beach, I hired a car, I had a cocktail and I flew to London to meet up with my friends. I slept overnight in the hired car so I didn’t pay for a hotel either.

“I had this fantastic trip and I saved £40 in the process so I would definitely do it again.”

After his overnight layover in Spain, Joe then went on to London the next day on a flight costing £10.99

However, it is not the first time a traveller has found a cheap way to travel in style.

In April, we told you about a bargain hunter who flew from London to Newcastle on a PRIVATE PLANE for £67 – half the price of a train ticket.
